Arriving in Chiang Mai yesterday, we have enjoyed a relaxing weekend here in Thailand. While we had to sleep overnight in Bangkok airport, Saturday gave us plenty of time to relax. The day also presented a major surprise, as I happened to randomly meet an old university friend in a cafe. We had not met for about 5 years, thus we were both surprised to meet again in such an odd location. I guess this proves that it is a relatively small world after all.
Today we have been bamboo rafting and elephant riding. While it is not the high season for tourism, it does feel a little like the Canary Islands in Europe. With so many people arriving from all kinds of countries, the city has a very international feel, though there is no sense of adventure being here. However, we did not really come looking for adventure, nor did we expect to find it in Thailand. This is just a great place to relax, not to mention cheap, thus I think we will enjoy spending some time here.
