Part 1 Part 2
I got inspired by James Clavell's masterpiece "Shogun" to make another visit to Izu-Hanto, which is an attractive and much visited peninsula south of Tokyo.  I last visited the peninsula in 2002, when I went to Ito and Hatsushima. The goal of my trip this time was Dogashima, which is located a quick bus journey away from Shimoda.  The latter town is located to the far south of the peninsula, and is the last stop on the train line.

Dogashima is famous for its dramatic rock formations facing the ocean, and I highly recommend joining a guided boat trip to view these caves.  While some caves apparently run deep into the mountains, one only gets a limited impression on the 20 minute long boat trips available. Another picture from inside one of the caves.  It is also possible to look into the caves from the park located above the caves.

A picture of the entrance to one of the caves.  The day we visited, the boats were not running in the morning due to "poor weather".  Although the waves were not that high, it is very difficult for the tourist boats to get into the small caves.  Thus, precaution is warranted. In this picture, Yuka is standing on top of one of the rock formations.
